The GUS PnP Pro is based on a newer sound processor from AMD. The AMD InterWave can handle up to 16 MB of RAM and can play 32 channels at 16 bit / 44.1 kHz. It also supports effects. The InterWave can be configured to look like classic Gravis Ultrasound hardware. For full compatibility the Pro card has 512 kB RAM on board. With the two soldered SIMM sockets it can be upgraded with 2x 4 MB to 8 MB. There exist modified versions of the GUS PnP with another two SIMM sockets soldered at the back side of the card.
The Gravis Ultrasound uses a different approach as Creatives Soundblaster Series. The GF1 is a fixed-function DSP that can play only samples from its own RAM. From there it can interpolate and mix 32 independent channels that are upsampled to the output sample rate.
This design makes the card perfect for tracker style music. When software has native support it can use the card to play nearly without CPU load music. (only note changes have to be transmitted)
